Event Information:
Princes Street is one of the streets
covered by the Edinburgh Marathon in
association with Oxfam. This is a
marathon race that has been held
each year in Edinburgh, Scotland
since 2003, usually in May. It is
run over the traditional distance of
42.195 kilometres (26.219 mi). The
principal charity partner for the
marathon is Oxfam. It also
supports many other charities -
including the other official
charities, Macmillan Cancer Support,
British Heart Foundation and Breast
Cancer Care.
Since 2008 the race has been titled
the Albert Bartlett Edinburgh
Marathon for sponsorship reasons.
The first edition of the Edinburgh
Marathon under the current
organization was held on 15 June,
2003 and drew 3,000 participants.
The following year saw over 5,000
take part; many of whom raised money
for charity. In 2004, over £2m was
raised for 150 different charities.
The 2005 marathon was watched by
75,000 spectators along its course.

The 2006 race was marred with
financial difficulties and was
nearly cancelled at the last minute
but for assistance from Edinburgh
City Council. Even so it attracted
around 11,000 runners and 100,000
spectators. In 27 degree heat the
race was won by Kenyan Joseph Mbithi
in two hours sixteen minutes - just
outside the race record. Angela Howe
was the first Scot to win the race,
being the first woman to finish.
Edinburgh, the capital of Scotland,
is divided into areas that generally
encompass a park (sometimes known as
"links"), a main local street (i.e.
street of local retail shops), a
high street (the historic main
street, not always the same as the
main local street, such as in
Corstorphine) and residential
buildings. In Edinburgh many
residences are tenements, although
the more southern and western parts
of the city have traditionally been
more affluent and have a greater
number of detached and semi-detached
villas.
The historic centre of Edinburgh is
divided into two by the broad green
swath of Princes Street Gardens. To
the south the view is dominated by
Edinburgh Castle, perched atop the
extinct volcanic crag, and the long
sweep of the Old Town trailing after
it along the ridge. To the north
lies Princes Street and the New
Town. The gardens were begun in 1816
on bogland which had once been the
Nor Loch.
