The Polish
people take New Year's Eve very seriously,
and although the capital city of Warsaw
may have the largest parties you will struggle
to find anywhere livelier than Krakow. An
increasingly popular party destination,
Krakow takes the occasion very seriously
with special nights at the local bars and
restaurants, packed hotels and of course
the obligatory competitive fireworks displays.

One of the
most popular events takes place in Krakow's
Main Square, where crowds gather in their
thousands to see in the New Year with fireworks
and live music. Large screens are erected
on the Town Hall Tower and behind the Adam
Mickiewicz monument to help the crowds see
all the action onstage. The Main Square
concert and party have been a fixture of
NYE in Krakow for over a decade now, and
the stage is situated on the eastern side
of the Main Square, in between the Sukiennice
and St Adalbert's Church. The fireworks
will begin as the countdown ends at midnight,
St. Mary’s Cathedral ringing the midnight
bell.
The focus
of most of the festivities, Kraków's historic
centre, which includes the Old Town, Kazimierz
and the Wawel Castle, was included as the
first of its kind on the list of UNESCO
World Heritage Sites in 1978. The Old Town
is the most prominent example of an old
town in the country. In addition to the
old town, the city's former Jewish district
of Kazimierz is particularly notable for
its many renaissance buildings and picturesque
streets. There are dozens of gardens, parks
and forests in Kraków, several, like the
Planty Park, Botanical Garden, Park Krakowski,
Jordan Park, Błonia Park and Strzelecki
Park], are located in the center of the
city and the surrounding districts.
You won't
have any problems finding somewhere to stay
in Krakow for New Year's Eve, although as
always it's worth booking as far in advance
as is practicable. Popular hotels include
the Ibis, Qubus, Fortuna, Hotel Classic,
Hotel Wentzl, Crystal Suites, Venetian House
Aparthotel, Sheraton Krakow Hotel and Andel's
Hotel Cracow.
