Event Information:

The 39th Ryder Cup Matches will be held September 28–30, , at the Medinah Country Club in Medinah, Illinois, United States. It will be the first time Illinois has staged the competition. Europe will be the defending Cup holder, having defeated the USA by 14˝ points to 13˝ in the 2010 competition at Celtic Manor Resort, Wales. The team captains will be Davis Love III for the USA and José María Olazábal for Europe. The Ryder Cup is a match play event, with each match worth one point. The competition format will be as follows:

Day 1 (Friday) - 4 foursome (alternate shot) matches in the morning session and 4 fourball (better ball) matches in the afternoon session
Day 2 (Saturday) - 4 foursome matches in the morning session and 4 fourball matches in the afternoon session
Day 3 (Sunday) - 12 singles matches

On the first two days there are 4 foursome matches and 4 fourball matches with the home captain choosing which are played in the morning and which in the afternoon. With a total of 28 points available, 14˝ points are required to win the Cup, and 14 points are required for the defending champion to retain the Cup. All matches are played to a maximum of 18 holes.

The teams: Europe

Rory McIlroy (23, NI), Justin Rose (32, Eng), Paul Lawrie (43, Sco), Graeme McDowell (33, NI), Francesco Molinari (29, Ita), Luke Donald (34, Eng), Lee Westwood (39, Eng), Sergio Garcia (32, Spa), Peter Hanson (34, Swe), Martin Kaymer (27, Ger), Nicolas Colsaerts (29, Bel), Ian Poulter (36, Eng)

United States

Tiger Woods (36), Bubba Watson (33), Jason Dufner (35), Keegan Bradley (26), Webb Simpson (27), Zach Johnson (36), Matt Kuchar (34), Phil Mickelson (42), Steve Stricker (45), Jim Furyk (42), Brandt Snedeker (31), Dustin Johnson (28)

The European team qualification rules have changed since 2010. The European Points List now takes precedence over the World Points List, while the captain's picks have been reduced from 3 to 2 with the top 5 players in the World Points List now qualifying rather than the top 4.

Only members of the European Tour can earn points in the above two lists. They may be full or affiliate members and must also satisfy (or be planning to satisfy) their membership obligations. Martin Laird did not become an affiliate member until and so his performances in 2011 were not counted. Carl Pettersson is not a member of the European Tour and is therefore not considered. The two captain's picks were announced on Monday, August 27, the day after the completion of the Johnnie Walker Championship. Olazábal chose Nicolas Colsaerts and Ian Poulter. Colsaerts will become the first player from Belgium to play in the Ryder Cup.

The first eight members of Team USA were finalized after the conclusion of the PGA Championship. Announced on September 4, the four captain's picks were Jim Furyk, Steve Stricker, Dustin Johnson, and Brandt Snedeker. Each captain has selected four vice-captains to assist him during the tournament. Love named the first two USA vice-captains in June and announced the other two after the PGA Championship:

Fred Couples
Mike Hulbert
Jeff Sluman
Scott Verplank

Olazábal named three of his vice-captains on August 16. The fourth vice-captain was announced on August 25:

Thomas Bjřrn
Darren Clarke
Paul McGinley
Miguel Ángel Jiménez

The European team consists of the top 12 eligible players in the world rankings. The USA had 11 of their top 12 eligible payers in the world rankings. The sole exception was the inclusion of Jim Furyk instead of Hunter Mahan (ranked 20, 12th USA golfer in world rankings)
